Our customers had recently moved into a new house and discovered mold in the basement. They had it treated, but after two weeks, noticed discoloration on the wall again. After removing the baseboard, they found that the previous owner had covered up a huge amount of insulation and paneling soaked with mold with a layer of drywall. Everything from the wood paneling to the studs was rotted through completely! If the homeowner hadn’t removed the baseboard, that mold might have never been found.
The Takeaway
When buying a home from a person who remodels and flips homes, you must be careful. Often, these home flippers will try to cover up major issues in the home to save money, rather than resolving the issues in the correct manner. We’ve seen this happen over and over, with a young couple purchasing a house only to discover numerous problems that the previous owner had covered up.
