Be Wary of Fixer-Uppers and Their Hidden Expenses

Be Wary of Fixer-Uppers and Their Hidden Expenses

You hear this kind of story too often in our line of work. A recent customer of ours purchased her first home out of pocket. She knew it was a bit of a fixer-upper, but never expected to find mold in the kitchen and basement. Upon inspection, a leak in the chimney was discovered, which had been allowing water to drain into the basement walls. Unable to afford to take care of all the issues at once, she had to demolish the kitchen herself and bring us back later to finish the remediation of the basement and air ducts.

What to Remember

If you’re considering purchasing a home that needs some work, you need to be cautious. There may be issues that you haven’t accounted for, like our customer in this story. Although she was aware her home wasn’t perfect, the extra money needed to fix a large mold issue came as an unwelcome surprise.
